5 Water Bottles That Will Make You Want to WorkoutBy John Davis - February 23, 2017
Agua. Aqua. Mâa. Shuǐ. Vand. Das Wasser. Nero. Mizu. Water. While some concepts are simply too difficult to express in every language, “water” certainly isn’t one of them. Water is life. And if you’re working up a sweat through an intense workout, well, it’s the only thing that stands between you and faceplanting on the gym floor from dehydration.
Not that you’d know anything about that, of course. If you’re anything like me, you made yet another yearly dedication to workout, get fit, and be all you can be, only to rescind that dedication as soon as you heard they were serving pie.
Delicious pie aside, motivation to start a new workout regimen is difficult. But what if you had an accessory that just screamed “take me out on a daily run!”? That would be some kind of magic, right? You’re in luck! These 5 water bottles will make you want to workout today, tomorrow, and pretty much every day of the week.
Soma Water Bottles
Soma water bottles are, quite literally, a work of modern art. With four color options, you’ll be able to pick and choose which one goes best with your workout clothes. Unlike most water bottles, Soma designs these bottles with a shatter-resistant, BPA-free borosilicate glass, shirking the more common and less enjoyable plastic. This means you’ll avoid that plasticy taste that often comes with water bottles, while also avoiding any worry about the plastic leaching chemicals into your water.
The company designs these water bottles as one-size-fits-all life accessories. They hold an admittedly small 17 ounces of water, but do utilize a soft silicone sleeve and have a leak-proof bamboo cap. This bottle is also perfectly designed to fit just about any cup or water bottle holder. You won’t find too many water bottles boasting those goodies.
To top it off, Soma believes fully in giving back. For every bottle purchased, Soma gives a donation to Charity: Water, a non-profit organization that provides clean, drinkable water to people in developing countries.
If you do decide this is the bottle for you, Soma has some very particular cleaning instructions.
- The natural bamboo lid is handwash only. Do not put it in a washing machine
- The bottle can be hand washed with warm, soapy water, or machine washed on the top rack only
- The silicone sleeve should never be removed
- The bottle should be stored with the cap off
The Soma water bottle has been praised by a large number of media outlets, including Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times, which called this water bottle “A welcome change to the status quo”.
Bkr Water Bottle
Have you ever wanted a water bottle that looks like you could just pull the pin, toss it like a grenade and yell “duck!”. Of course you have. And the bkr water bottle offers up exactly that benefit, in spades.
Few water bottle makers provide you with as many options as bkr. Their only water bottle store will make your eyes bug out from the vast number of options. You can split their bottle collections up into several categories.
First, there’s the size options. Bkr sells their bottles in 3 different sizes: “Teeny”, or 250 ML; “Little”, or 500 ML; and “Big” or 1 liter. Those categories are further broken up into the myriad design options that bkr offers up. This ranges from the somewhat intimidating “don’t you dare steal my water bottle” designs from their “Spiked” collection, to the lovingly new-age “Metallic Hearts” collection. The company also has an “Initials” collection, with a red sleeve/white letter color scheme for anyone that wants a bottle with their favorite letter on it, and a large selection of plain bottles with a smorgousboard of color options with fun names such as “Juliet” (opaque lavender), “Romeo” (sheer periwinkle blue), or “Gramercy” (sheer lush garden green).
If the large selection of sizes and colors aren’t enough for you, perhaps the functional design will be. All of these bottles are made from BPA-free soda-lime glass, include a soft silicone sleeve, and a polypropylene cap. Interestingly, bkr designs the cap to be perfect for sipping water. The two smaller sizes, “Teeny” and “Little”, will fit into most cupholders and water bottle pouches, while the “Big” design will not fit in your cupholders, but may still fit in your workout bag water bottle pouch.
So what’s the big deal with bkr? The company considers their water bottles more than just a water bottle. These are fashion accessories, and it shows in the design. Bkr is also socially conscious, donating a portion of all proceeds to help with bring clean water to developing nations and communities.
The bkr water bottles are dishwasher safe, but the company recommends you keep them on the top rack. They also suggest hot, soapy water for hand cleaning, and storing the bottle with the cap off.
These water bottles are fan favorites among actresses and models. You’ll find one hanging from the fingers of such big names as Charlize Theron, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Wilde, Vanessa Hudgens, Zoe Saldana, Kirsten Dunst, Jessica Alba, Blake Lively and more.
Hidrate Spark Water Bottle
If you’re ready to get serious about your workout, grabbing a water bottle that demands you actually use it might just be necessary. That’s where the Hidrate Spark comes in. This bottle is all muscle, standing in almost stark contrast to the fashion accessory focus taken by bkr. The Hidrate Spark is the water bottle for the 21st century, incorporating Bluetooth technology and tracking to help you monitor just how much water you’re consuming.
Yes, you read that right. The Hidrate Spark includes a sensor inside each water bottle that records how many ounces or milliliters of water you’re drinking. All you need to do is sync your water bottle (get used to saying that) with the downloadable Hydration app. You’ll need a phone that uses Bluetooth Low Energy (e.g., Bluetooth 4.0 and beyond). If you aren’t sure whether your phone is compatible, check your phone’s hardware before you make the purchase. If you’re running an Android-based phone, you can check this from the “About Phone” section in your settings, and tap on “Hardware info”. For iPhone users, the iPhone 4s or newer all use Bluetooth Low Energy.
The app also provides some other unique benefits, including:
- Customized hydration goals
- Hydration history
- Keep an eye on a friend’s progress
- Fun notifications
- See bottle’s last paired location on a map
The Hidrate Spark additionally syncs with other fitness apps, such as MyFitnessPal, Google Fit, Jawbone Up, MapMyFitness, and Apple HealthKit.
This bottle can do more than just update an app, however. It also glows at regular intervals to remind you that you need to drink some more water, helping you achieve the mystical “8 glasses of water” requirement (which is 2 liters, or half a gallon). The diamond-shaped contours on the container fit well into the hand, helping avoid slippage. And of course, the battery is easily replaceable and should last about a year, so you’ll find that all of the benefits mentioned above are not simply one-time use.
Although the bottle only comes in one size, it’s a good size. It fits well into all cup holders, although it may be a bit tall for some water bottle pouches. The Hidrate Spark holds a solid 24 ounces (710 ML), so you’ll only need to drain it a few times before you meet your daily water intake goals. The bottle is wholly plastic, but completely BPA free.
You may also be surprised by how easy it is to take care of this device (since we can actually call it that). The bottle is dishwasher safe, although you’ll need to make sure you remove the sensor stick, which is handwash only. You’ll only need to unscrew the battery compartment to change the batteries, meaning you can hand wash the sensor stick with the batteries still inside.
Interested in the Hidrate Spark? You’re not alone! This bottle takes such a different approach to the act of drinking water that it’s received positive reviews on the Today Show, and on Yahoo! Finance, BuzzFeed, and Forbes, among several others. With multiple colors to choose from, you’ll find the Hidrate Spark may be just what you need to get active again.
When you think of a vacuum, you don’t usually think of a water bottle. But hey, part of keeping your body clean is through regular exercise and drinking lots and lots of water. The Hydro Flask is one simple, yet high-functioning bottle that’s going to get through your workout goals using — you guessed it — vacuum technology.
The main draw for the Hydro Flask is indeed its vacuum-sealed design. This stainless steel water bottle is designed to keep liquids inside of it from changing temperature for a long, long time. That means you can keep hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold. If you’re using this in the winter, you can keep that warm water, tea or coffee hot for a full 12 hours. But the real benefit here is cold liquids, which can be kept cold for a solid 24 hours. Impressed? We sure are.
Hydro Flask actually sells several versions of their bottles for very specific purposes. That includes their Hydration bottle (which we’re focusing on here), as well as ones for coffee, beer and food.
The Hydration bottle from Hydro Flask comes in a rainbow of color options with multiple ways to accessorize and personalize the bottle. You can buy it in 12 different sizes, ranging from 12 ounces to 64 ounces, with two separate mouth sizes (standard or wide), and purchase it with several different types of caps, including a wide mouth straw lid, a flip cap, a sports cap, and a loop cap.
What’s the secret behind Hydro Flask, you ask? It’s all in the technology. Hydro Flask uses their patented TempShield™ technology. This is a double-walled, vacuum sealed design that helps keep the inside at one temperature. “Bring ice water with you in the morning,” says Hydro Flask, “and we promise you’ll still have ice in the afternoon.” That’s a pretty bold claim.
Hydro Flask is all about insulation from the top down. They also include insulation technology and features in their different caps. This helps prevent temperature changes through the more vulnerable part of the product. Their new Flex Cap, for example, includes a honeycomb design that helps normalize the temperature, just like in a beehive.
Not awesome enough for you? Fine. How about this: Hydro Flask is a constant giver. The company spends a good amount of money to help maintain public green spaces and parks, and utilizes an additional 5% Back program, which donates money to a large number of non-profit organizations, such as Charity : Water, Leave No Trace, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Adopt-A-Classroom and more.
The company provides a few, very important tips for taking proper care of your Hydro Flask. These include:
- Upon receipt, hand wash the bottle with hot, soapy water
- Other washes should involve white distilled vinegar and a bottle brush, rinsing with warm water afterward
- Use baking soda to clean for difficult spots (2-3 tbps with warm water)
- No machine washing, as this can cause discoloring
- Never immerse the Hydro Flask in hot water, as this can discolor the powder coating
- Never place the bottle in the freezer
- Never place the bottle in the over
- Never place any of the caps in the dishwasher
Admittedly, this is one bottle that requires a lot of TLC. However, with so much to choose from and a bundle of ways to customize the bottle to make it your own, you’ll find yourself working out more often just for the opportunity to show this one off at the gym.
GRAYL Purifier Bottles
Stop what you’re doing. We have finally found the holy…GRAYL? The GRAYL water purifier bottles are the it thing for anyone that wants to hit the trails in the great outdoors. The beauty of this water bottle is in the name: “purifier”. The Purifier Bottle is designed to act as an all-in-one filtration system shoved inside a tiny water bottle. You can literally ignore all of those scary messages about not drinking the water when you’re passing by a bubbling mountain brook. With the GRAYL Purifier Bottle, you can just dip the bottle in a stream, filter it through the cap and boom. Clean, delicious, germ-free water.
The key to this bottle is indeed the filtration system attached to the bottom. You can purchase replacement filters for when yours runs reaches the end of its lifecycle, but you get to keep the bottle. The filters are perhaps the expensive part of the bottle, costing $24.50 per filter. That said, each filter is designed for around 300 refill cycles, equivalent to filtering 40 gallons, or 150 liters of water. GRAYL notes that if you do try to use the filter beyond the recommended amount of time, you’re running a serious risk of drinking unsafe water.
Let’s talk about how this beauty works. First, you fill the Outer [Re]Fill portion at your desired water source, making sure not to fill past the fill line. Next, you’ll press the device on the ground with your body weight, applying a nice downward force. You’ll want to make sure the lid is removed before applying this downward pressure. And that’s it. Voila! You now have clean, delicious water from any source.
The magic is in the filter, which uses patented technology that traps disease-causing germs and also prevents the growth of mildew, mold and bacteria. The filters use activated natural carbon made from coconut shells that attract viruses, bacteria, protozoa, heavy metals and industrial chemicals.
As far as choices go, the GRAYL is certainly no Hydro Flask or bkr. You’re pretty much relegated to orange, green, blue or black, all of which are designed with lightweight but durable BPA-free plastic. You do have an additional option to use the noticeably heavier GRAYL Legend, the company’s first version, which is all stainless steel. It’s gorgeous, but far heavier than the ultralightweight options and perhaps not the best option if you really are going hiking all day. Nevertheless, all of the GRAYL bottles are a perfect size for cup holders or water bottle pouches.
The biggest negative with this water bottle, beyond the fact that you’ll have to purchase rather expensive replacement filters, is that it has a relatively small capacity compared to most others bottles. You’ll only be able to fit 16 ounces of water into it at a time, meaning you’ll be refilling it rather frequently, especially on hot days. Which, of course, won’t be a problem if you’re hitting the backcountry and backpacking across the Appalachian Trail, something we’re sure you’ll want to do after picking up a GRAYL Purifier Bottle.
Your GRAYL Purifier Bottle comes with a few noteworthy care instructions from the company that you may not find with other water bottles. These include:
- Avoid letting the GRAYL freeze. Once is fine, but if it freezes more than once, replace the filter
- The outer shell, inner press and lid are top rack dishwasher safe. You can also wash them with warm, soapy water.
- Avoid using soap on the filter. Never place the filter in a dishwasher
- The purifier filter should not be used with any liquids other than water
- The purifier filter does not work on saltwater
- Never put any GRAYL components in the microwave
A GRAYL Purifier Bottle is probably the next best thing to have your own water filtration plant. It’s any wonder that they don’t just hand these things out for free in developing countries!
