How to Choose the Best Under Sink Water FilterBy John Davis - July 30, 2015
An under sink water filter is the most economical way to turn your municipal water into high quality drinking water for your household.
Furthermore, installing an under sink system is a great bargain as compared to a whole house filtration system. For one third of the price of a larger system you can get bottled water quality H2O that has 99% of all foreign contaminants filtered out.
However, with dozens of different choices on the market and hundreds of dollars on the line, it’s important to select the system that is correct for you.
Let’s take a look at three different water filter systems in a similar price range and then decide based on their features, which is the best system to remove the contaminants for your household.
The NSA 100us
The NSA 100us undersink water filter is the easiest to install. Straight from the box, any person who knows how to handle a wrench can install this system in less than half an hour. After you’ve connected the input and output lines you’re ready to go.
The NSA 100us uses activated carbon to filter your water. You can expect to effectively filter about 15,000 gallons of water before you need replacement filters. It also comes with a 3 year warranty.
While this system is easy to install, it has its drawbacks. The filter on the NSA 100us can become ineffective over time. As water always seeks the path of least resistance, in time it will cut channels through the activated carbon media. When this happens the filtering power of the system is greatly reduced. You may end up drinking unfiltered house water without even realizing it!
Additionally, the NSA 100us isn’t certified by any independent rating agencies. It lacks both a NSF (Public Health and Safety Organization) certification and a WQA (Water Quality Association) Gold Seal. This lack of independent testing and quality assessment draws into question whether the NSA 100us is really the most effective system for filtering your water.
Home Master TMAFC Artesian Full Contact Reverse Osmosis System
The Home Master RO filtration system is a more complete system than the NSA 100us. The $131 increase in price is buys you several features that the NSA 100us lacks.
Notably, the Home Master comes with a dedicated counter top drinking water faucet. Some people choose to hire a professional to install this part, but the long term convenience is worth it.
Additionally, the Home Master cleans many types of water through a seven stage filter. This filtration system is more effective than the NSA’s single filter, and you don’t have to worry about a reduction in water supply or quality over time.
Unlike the NSA 100us, where water passes through the filter without being collected, the Home Master stores water in a 50GPD (Gallons Per Day) tank.
You’ll also notice that the Home Master Reverse Osmosis system is lacking in accreditation as well. Several of the components used in the construction of the system are NSF accredited, however, the product description fails to mention which pieces. This system also lacks a WQA certification and it’s filters are not independently tested for quality assurance.
APEC Water High-Flow 90 GPD Reverse Osmosis System
Like the Home Master, the APEC RO-90 system is a reverse osmosis system. It stores filtered water in a tank, however at 90 gallons per day, its output is nearly double that of the Home Master’s. This is a good feature because it ensures that no matter what the situation and no matter how many guests you have, you’re always going to have an adequate supply of fresh drinking water.
The APEC is made from high quality, NSF certified parts built in the USA. Notably, the filters that the APEC 90 Reverse Osmosis system uses are NSF certified. Neither of the other two systems can claim the same distinction.
However, what’s going to give you the most peace of mind is that the APEC Water 90 GPD Reverse Osmosis system has the WQA Gold Seal of certification. From the WQA website:
“A WQA certified product bears a distinguished Mark indicating that the product has undergone evaluation and testing to verify that the product will perform as the certified claims indicate.”
This independent quality assurance agency ensures that a product lives up to its advertised claims and is going to function at a high level for its natural lifetime. It’s a difficult stamp of approval to earn and only products that pass a stringent series of tests are granted certification. This mark means the APEC RO-90 is made of quality components and will function exactly as promised.
Like the Home Faster filtration system, the APEC RO-90 also features a standalone countertop drinking faucet. This faucet is chrome plated and designed to look good on any kitchen sink.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that the APEC’s five stage filtration process is among the best in the industry. Furthermore, it is the best in the industry for removing fluoride. It effectively scrubs 98% of fluoride from your drinking water, well above the recommended levels laid out for water purification systems, and well above the level of filtration found in other systems.
At $299 the APEC Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Filter System provides a superior value for the price. The APEC’s one year warranty is lower than the other two systems, but the system is built with high quality components and designed to outlast almost every other consumer product that you can buy today.
Which Product is the Best Fit For You?
When it comes down to it, if you’re going to invest in an under sink water filtration system, you want to make sure you get the best product. That’s why a majority of people recommend APEC reverse osmosis systems.
At $299 it’s got the best of both worlds. Unlike the NSA 100us, the APEC system works with a multi stage filter that won’t wear out over time. You’ll also have the option of installing a chrome plated faucet that dispenses filtered, great tasting drinking water.
Unlike the Home Master system, the APEC water filter doesn’t add any additional minerals to your water. After all, the reason you’re buying a water filter is to clean your water, not add anything to it, or just to remove chlorine.
Additionally, the 90GPD rating on the APEC system is a great feature. The increased capacity means you’ll never run out of reverse osmosis water at the worst moment. Furthermore, you won’t ever have to think about your water quality, as APEC’s filtration system sets the industry standard in home water treatment.
Finally, the APEC 90 reverse osmosis system is one of only a handful of under sink filtration systems with a WQA Gold Seal. The APEC has been independently tested and proven to remove not just taste and odor, but up to 99% of all contaminants from your water.
What is Reverse Osmosis?
In it’s simplest form reverse osmosis is the process of using pressure to pass water from a more concentrated area through a semi-permeable membrane to a less concentrated area.
