Gululu Smart Water Bottle for KidsBy John Davis - March 16, 2017
Perhaps saying that kids are the most energetic creatures on Earth is an overstatement, but if you live with one, it certainly feels that way. My three-year-old hasn’t stopped running and bouncing around since he learned how to walk, and I don’t see him slowing down anytime soon.
But don’t get me wrong; active kids are a blessing to their parents. There’s just a teeny-tiny issue. Their love for playtime is disproportionate to their love for drinking water. And if you fail to get them to drink lots of H20, they might end up becoming dehydrated. It’s a tough parenting challenge. Fortunately, you can find a number of tips on the internet. For example, Mommy Shorts’ ingenious tricks (which you can read here) are helpful, particularly the first two: Buy fun cups and make it a game. If you think these two tricks will work with your kid, then you should check out Gululu.
Gululu: A Fun and Interactive Water Bottle for Kids
Gululu is a 400ml smart water bottle for kids. It comes in five pastel colors: Starfish Pink, Bowhead Blue, Submarine Yellow, Unidragon Violet, and Monster Green. Although it’s fun-looking, it’s also tough enough to survive the carefree nature of children. It has an IP rating of 67 (dustproof and waterproof) and it can survive a three-foot drop. It’s also safe to drink from as it’s made of BPA-free materials and it complies with FDA’s standards.
Besides looking cute, the Gululu water bottle promotes healthy hydration using a virtual pet game. Using a small screen on Gululu’s side, kids get to interact with a virtual pet of their choice from the Gululu Universe. The pet first comes alive once your child takes his first sip. Your child can then interact with his pet by touching or shaking the bottle, which may prompt the pet to laugh, leap, or play. The pets also grow, but not like other virtual pets that require kids to stay in front the computer for hours. Gululu’s pets evolve as your kid drinks water. As he reaches the hydration goals set by Gululu, stories and adventures from the Gululu Universe also unfold. By associating hydration to the development of a virtual companion, Gululu helps children develop healthy hydration habits that they can take with them as they grow up.
Then again, kids are clever. They’ll eventually realize that they might be able trick Gululu by pouring the water out without drinking it. Will their tricks work? Fortunately, Gululu is one step ahead. The bottle is equipped with a motion sensor and “inclinometer” that measures the movement and the angle of the bottle’s inclination. With these sensors in place, plus a few lines of software code, Gululu can detect whether your kid is drinking or cheating.
The Gululu water bottle can also help your babe develop social skills. If he has a playmate who also owns a Gululu bottle, they can make their pets compare, compete, and play with each other. All they need to do is shake their bottle near each other, and their Gululus will automatically create a peer-to-peer connection (requires Wi-Fi).
Keeping Track of Your Kids’ Hydration
Of course, as parents, we all want to stay informed. For this purpose, we can use the Gululu smartphone app. The app syncs with the Gululu water bottle over Wi-Fi. It displays the amount of water consumed by your child in a day and in a week as measured by the bottle. It also tells you how much water your kid is drinking every two hours. Finally, it grades your child’s drinking habits.
Aside from keeping track of your child’s hydration level, the app lets you customize your kid’s experience. For one, you can set a personalized hydration goal for your child, which is generated by the app based on his age, weight, height, and activity level. You can also restrict your child from playing with Gululu during school or sleeping hours. When turned on, the School Mode removes Gululu’s game features during normal school hours. The Sleep Mode, on the other hand, prevents your child from playing with Gululu past bedtime. Both modes run automatically based on a schedule so that you don’t have to turn them on and off.
Questions and Answers

How long is the bottle’s battery life?
On a single charge, Gululu can run for 2 to 3 days. You then charge the bottle using its wireless charger. Charging takes about three hours.
Can I put cold/hot water in it?
Gululu can hold water that is between 32 and 149 degrees Fahrenheit. You can pour cold water in it, but not boiling water.
Can I wash the bottle ib a dishwasher?
Unfortunately, no. It‘s only safe to hand wash the bottle with dish soap and water.
Should I buy it?
Does your kid need encouragement to drink more water? If yes, then Gululu is an excellent solution. Users are saying a lot of good things about it, from the design of the bottle to the reliability of the app. Besides, it isn’t very expensive, although it’s not cheap either. Gululu sells for $129 on mygululu.com, which includes the Gululu water bottle, 2 replaceable drinking spouts, a store booklet, a set of reward stickers, a wireless charging dock, and a charging cable.
